Ninang dress and mother of the bride Filipiniana
Being asked to stand as a ninang is an honour with a dress code attached. You are part of the entourage, you appear in the formal photographs, and you are expected to look considered without stepping on the bride. A ninang dress has to manage all of that at once, and this collection holds the Filipiniana we sell for exactly that role, along with mother of the bride gowns.
The same pieces suit a mother of the groom, a principal sponsor at a wedding, and a godmother at a binyag or confirmation.
Dressing for the role
-
Principal sponsor at a wedding
Floor length, covered shoulders, quiet colour. A church ceremony usually expects all three. Mary MR762 and Gretchen ML896 are the classic shapes.
-
Mother of the bride or groom
You will be standing at the front for a long time and hugging a great many people. Claudia MR6 in lace and chiffon moves well and photographs softly.
-
Godmother at a binyag
Less formal, often mid-morning, often warm. A lighter piece such as Romina JN25 works better than a full gown.
-
Traditional ceremonies
For a heritage or Spanish-era theme, a full baro't saya suits the occasion. See Isabela MRW021 or the wider Maria Clara collection.
Choosing a colour for a ninang dress
This is the question we are asked most, and the answer is usually decided for you. Many Filipino weddings assign the entourage a colour, so ask the couple before you fall in love with anything. If nobody has assigned one, the safe range is champagne, beige, dusty rose, sage, navy and deep burgundy.
Avoid pure white and ivory, which read as competing with the bride even when they photograph differently in person. Bright red is worth checking, since some families reserve it. If you would rather see every length together first, browse our Filipiniana long gowns.
Fabrics and how they wear
| Fabric | How it feels | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lace over chiffon | Soft and fluid, with weight only in the bodice. | Long ceremonies and warm churches. |
| Neoprene | Structured. Holds a shape rather than clinging. | A sculpted silhouette and evening receptions. |
| Duchess satin | Heavy, smooth, with a definite sheen. | Formal evening weddings and galas. |
| Organza | Crisp and sheer, which is what holds butterfly sleeves up. | Traditional baro't saya and alampay sets. |
Butterfly sleeves are the detail people notice, and they behave differently by fabric. Organza sleeves stand away from the shoulder; satin sleeves sit closer and read as more contemporary.
Size and fit
Almost everything here is made to order, which means the measurements you send are the measurements we cut. Take them in inches over the underwear you plan to wear on the day, since a structured bodice changes the number.
Philippine sizing runs smaller than American or Australian sizing, often by a full size, so do not order by the label you usually buy. If your bust and waist point to different sizes, which is common, ask about custom fitting rather than picking the larger one.
Order earlier than feels necessary. A made-to-order gown needs production time on top of delivery, and alterations at your end need more. Current timelines by country are on our shipping page.
Completing the outfit
An alampay or panuelo across the shoulders is the traditional finish and gives you coverage in church. A bolero does the same job in a more modern shape. For jewellery, our Philippine accessories range keeps the look coherent.
If your husband is a ninong in the same entourage, match the fabric rather than the exact colour: see men's barong tagalog.
Questions from ninangs and mothers
What colour should a ninang dress be?
Ask the couple first, since many weddings assign the entourage a colour. Failing that, champagne, beige, dusty rose, sage, navy or burgundy are all safe. Avoid white and ivory.
Does a ninang have to wear Filipiniana?
Not always, but it is expected at a traditional ceremony and it is what the photographs will show. A bolero over a plain gown is a middle path.
How long before the wedding should I order?
Earlier than you think. A gown is cut for you, then shipped, then possibly altered. See the shipping page for current timelines.
Can I order the same dress in several sizes for a group of ninangs?
Yes. Send the measurements for each person and we cut them individually, which is more reliable than everyone guessing a size.
Will the fabric be too warm for a daytime church wedding?
Lace over chiffon and organza breathe best. Duchess satin and neoprene suit evening events better.
Can the sleeves be adjusted?
Yes, sleeve length and shape are part of custom fitting. Tell us what you need when you order.
