A Filipiniana long gown is the full-length version of Philippine national dress: butterfly sleeves, a fitted bodice and a skirt that reaches the floor. It is what you wear when the invitation says formal, and what most Filipinas reach for at a wedding, a debut or a gala.

The shapes, and what the names mean
The vocabulary trips people up, so here is the short version.
- Traje de mestiza: the formal full-length gown with standing butterfly sleeves. The most traditional shape. Sarah JN550 is one.
- Serpentina: fitted through the hip, then flaring low, so the skirt moves like a fishtail. See Clara MR8.

- Top and skirt sets: two pieces rather than one, which are easier to size and easier to re-wear. Lisa MR415 is a set.

Size and fit
Every Filipiniana long gown on this page is made to order, so your measurements decide the cut. Take them in inches, wearing the underwear you intend to wear on the day, because a structured bodice changes the reading. Height matters here in a way it does not for a midi dress: tell us your height and your shoe heel so the hem finishes where it should.
Philippine sizing runs smaller than American, Canadian or Australian sizing, often by a full size. If your bust and waist indicate different sizes, ask about custom fitting instead of rounding up.

Caring for a long gown
Hang it the moment the parcel opens, then let the creases fall out overnight. Steam on low rather than pressing, and keep the iron away from embroidery and beadwork. Organza and handwoven fabric should be dry cleaned. Store the gown on a padded hanger, not folded, and keep it out of a plastic bag.
Questions about Filipiniana long gowns
What is the difference between a terno and a traje de mestiza?
A terno is the one-piece dress with butterfly sleeves. A traje de mestiza is the older, more formal full-length ensemble the terno grew out of. In shops the words are often used loosely.
Can I wear a long gown to a daytime wedding?
Yes, if the invitation says formal. Choose chiffon or lace rather than satin, which reads heavy before evening.
Do the butterfly sleeves fold for travel?
They flatten, but they crease. Pack the gown last, unpack it first, and steam the sleeves before wearing.
Can I have a gown made without sleeves?
Yes. Sleeve shape is part of custom fitting, though a Filipiniana without butterfly sleeves stops reading as Filipiniana to most guests.

Is a two-piece set easier to size than a gown?
